L’uscita del Regno Unito dall’Unione Europea è stata decisa da un referendum, di cui si sono avuti i risultati lo scorso 24 giugno. Ci si interroga sul futuro. Brexit pone all’Europa questioni importanti, rivelando criticità da affrontare con decisione. Lo stesso Pontefice ha parlato di «un’aria di divisione» in Europa, davanti alla quale occorre «trovare soluzioni che siano percorribili». Serve — ha proseguito, commentando Brexit — che l’Unione Europea ritrovi «la forza che ha avuto nelle sue radici», che faccia «un passo di creatività», persino che si possa «pensare un’altra forma di unione». Ricreare nuove frontiere che limitano la solidarietà tra i popoli d’Europa sarebbe uno dei più gravi errori della morale politica dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale.

110 È LA FINE DEL TRATTATO DI SYKES-PICOT? A un secolo dagli accordi che hanno ridisegnato il Medio Oriente

Subito dopo l’entrata in guerra, nel 1914, della Turchia a fianco degli Imperi Centrali, le potenze dell’Intesa stipularono tra loro trattati e accordi al fine di dividersi le spoglie dell’Impero ottomano, una volta terminato il conflitto. L’Inghilterra inoltre si impegnò anche con promesse di diverso tipo con i capi religiosi e con i movimenti nazionalistici arabi per garantirsi il loro sostegno nella lotta contro i turchi o, in alcuni casi, la loro neutralità. Questi accordi fissarono un principio che fu sempre tenuto fermo, cioè che era diritto delle potenze europee ridisegnare la carta geografica del Medio Oriente; e ciò avvenne non tenendo conto delle differenze sociali e religiose delle popolazioni interessate, ma solo degli interessi economici e politici delle grandi potenze coloniali.

125 LA QUALITÀ DELLA MISERICORDIA IN SHAKESPEARE

Nell’inaugurare l’Anno della Misericordia, Papa Francesco ha citato il Mercante di Venezia, di Shakespeare. Porzia, l’eroina, durante la drammatica scena del processo, mentre difende il mercante Antonio contro l’accanimento legalistico di Shylock, dice: «La qualità della misericordia non è forzata. Essa scende come pioggia gentile dal cielo sulla terra». Abbiamo un appello alla misericordia anche in Misura per misura, nelle parole pronunciate da un’altra eroina, Isabella, che intercede per la vita del «malfattore» Claudio, suo fratello, davanti al giudice «preciso», Angelo, il quale insiste sulla giustizia legale. Anche nella tragedia Re Lear, questo appello non è incompatibile con un richiamo alla giustizia a un livello più personale.

132 CONVERSAZIONE CON IL CARDINALE SCHÖNBORN SULL’«AMORIS LAETITIA»

Più volte Papa Francesco ha affermato che il card. Christoph Schönborn ha colto bene e correttamente comunicato il significato dell’Esortazione apostolica Amoris laetitia. Per questo il nostro direttore lo ha intervistato in una conversazione ampia e distesa. Emergono tutti i temi fondamentali del documento magisteriale. In particolare viene chiarita la situazione di coloro che non riescono a realizzare oggettivamente la nostra concezione del matrimonio e a trasformare il loro modo di vita secondo quella esigenza. Dal dialogo appare che con questa Esortazione il Papa esercita «il suo ruolo di pastore, di maestro e di dottore della fede», e che con essa l’insegnamento della Chiesa fa «un passo ulteriore» nell’approccio al matrimonio e alla famiglia.

153 ELEZIONI AMMINISTRATIVE 2016

Il 5 giugno scorso sono stati chiamati alle urne 13 milioni di elettori per rinnovare le amministrazioni di 1.342 Comuni italiani. L’ analisi del voto fa emergere tre dati politici: l’astensione «atipica», la tripartizione politica del sistema italiano e l’ondata culturale europea, che evidenzia una crisi dei partiti tradizionali e l’emergere di movimenti alternativi al sistema. Dai ballottaggi del 19 giugno esce sconfitto il Pd, che però rimane il primo partito, vincente in 45 Comuni, mentre il centro-destra amministrerà 34 città. Il M5S vince 19 ballottaggi su 20, in particolare a Roma e a Torino. Il modello bipolare di competizione a Milano accredita la città a essere un esempio di metropoli europea.

161 URUGUAY, IL PAESE PIÙ LAICO DELL’AMERICA LATINA

L’Uruguay è un Paese unico nel suo genere: è un laboratorio della laicità in mezzo a un continente cristiano. Questo fenomeno si spiega con l’arrivo di idee razionaliste in questa parte dell’America Latina e con un’organizzazione delle correnti religiose che lì è stata molto più tardiva che altrove. La Chiesa cattolica fu fondata alla fine del secolo XIX, quando la pressione laica era molto forte. L’identità del Paese non è definita dalla religione o dalla geografia, ma dalle idee politiche che si difendono: repubblicane, egualitarie, popolari. Ma, recentemente, diversi episodi hanno riacceso la polemica con la Chiesa. Rimane ancora da costruire una società del dialogo, in cui la libertà delle idee e dei credo sia veramente rispettata.

172 PAPA FRANCESCO IN ARMENIA. Tra un popolo che ha «pelle di pietra» e «tenerezza di madre»

Dal 24 al 26 giugno 2016, Papa Francesco ha compiuto il suo 14° viaggio apostolico, recandosi in Armenia. Parte di un più ampio viaggio nel Caucaso meridionale — terra di faglie culturali e spirituali, cerniera tra Europa e Asia —, che prevede una seconda tappa in Georgia e Azerbaigian a settembre, questa tappa ha toccato una terra di antiche radici cristiane. Il Pontefice ha fatto appello allo spirito ecumenico perché possa essere segno efficace per superare i conflitti e la memoria ferita dal «genocidio» del 1915. L’«esperienza gloriosa e drammatica» del popolo armeno, che vive «una vita di pietra e una tenerezza di madre», richiede oggi che si moltiplichino gli sforzi affinché nelle controversie attuali prevalga sempre il dialogo, la ricerca della pace, la collaborazione tra gli Stati, guardando a un futuro che trova il suo simbolo nell’arca di Noè.

187 MICHIELETTO CORREGGE PUCCINI

Al Teatro dell’Opera di Roma è stato rappresentato Il trittico di Giacomo Puccini con la regia di Damiano Michieletto. I tre atti unici (Il tabarro, Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi), che Puccini voleva fossero rappresentati in un’unica serata, offrono materia di riflessione su alcuni degli aspetti più cupi del comportamento umano (violenza, esercitata e subita, avidità, inganno...). La musica sublima il tutto. Michieletto, con la sua regia, calca la mano sulle condizioni di ingiustizia, fonte di sofferenza in larghi strati della società, e non si astiene, come è sua abitudine, da alcune forzature che hanno lo scopo di avvicinare all’attualità situazioni ambientate da Puccini in epoche passate.

The exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union was decided by a referendum, the results of which were announced on June 24. What now for the future is asked. The outcome of Brexit now challenges Europe with important questions, revealing critical issues to be addressed firmly. The Pontiff has spoken of «an air of division» in Europe, before which it is necessary «to find viable solutions ». It serves - he said, commenting on Brexit - that the European Union will regain «the force that it had in its roots» «that it takes a creative step», so that it can «think about another form of union». To recreate new frontiers limiting the solidarity between the peoples of Europe would be one of the most serious errors of moral policy since the Second World War.

110 IS IT THE END OF THE SYKES-PICOT TREATY? A century on since the agreements that reshaped the Middle East

Following Turkey’s entry into the war in 1914, as an alley of the Central Empires, the Entente powers stipulated treaties and agreements between themselves in order to divide the spoils of the Ottoman Empire once the conflict had ended. In addition, Britain committed itself with different kinds of promises with the religious leaders and the Arab nationalist movements to secure their support in the fight against the Turks, or in some cases to guarantee their neutrality. These agreements fixed a principle that always held firm, that it was the right of the European powers to redraw the map of the Middle East; and this happened without taking into account the social and religious differences of the populations concerned, but only of economic and political interests of the great colonial powers.
125 EXAMPLES OF MERCY IN SHAKESPEARE

Upon inaugurating the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis quoted the Merchant of Venice, by Shakespeare. During the dramatic court scene, the heroine, Portia, defended the merchant Antonio against Shylock’s legalistic fury, saying the; «quality of mercy is not strained; it droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath». This appeal to mercy is also found in Measure for Measure, in the words spoken by another heroine, Isabella, who intercedes for the life of the «evildoer» Claudio, her brother, in front of the «precise» judge, Angelo, who insists on legal justice. Even in the tragedy of King Lear, this appeal is not incompatible with a call to justice on a more personal level.

132 A CONVERSATION WITH CARDINAL SCHÖNBORN ABOUT «AMORIS LAETITIA»

On numerous occasions, Pope Francis has stated that the card. Christoph Schönborn understood and properly communicated the meaning of the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris laetitia. For this reason, our director interviewed the Cardinal in a wide reaching and open conversation during which all of the fundamental issues of the magisterial document emerge. In particular, this inteview clarified the situation of those who fail to objectively realize the church’s conception of marriage and to transform the way of life according to that requirement. Throughout the conversation, what appears is that with this Exhortation, the Pope exercises «his role as pastor, teacher and doctor of the faith», and with it, the Church's teaching takes «a further step» in the approach to marriage and the family.

On June 5, 13 million Italain voters were called to the polls to vote for the administrations of 1,342 Italian municipalities. An analysis of the vote reveals data of three political factors: the «atypical» abstention; the tripartite division of the Italian political system; and the European cultural shift, which highlights a crisis of the traditional parties; and the emergence of movements alternative to the system. From the 19 June ballots, the Democratic Party emerged defeated, but still remains the largest party by winning in 45 municipalities, while the center-right will administer 34 cities. The M5S won 19 of the 20 ballots, including Rome and Turin. The bi-pole competitive model in Milan accredits the city to be an example of a European metropolis.
161 URUGUAY, THE MOST LAY COUNTRY IN LATIN AMERICA

Uruguay is a country unique of its kind: it is a laboratory of secularism in the midst of a Christian continent. This phenomenon is explained by the arrival of rationalist ideas in this part of Latin America and with an organization of religious currents that arrived much later here than elsewhere. The Catholic Church was founded in the late nineteenth century when the pressure from secularism was very strong. The country’s identity is not defined by religion or geography, but by the political ideas that have been defended: republican, egalitarian, popular. But recently, several episodes have rekindled the controversy with the Church: to build a society able to dialogue, in which the freedom of ideas and beliefs are really respected remains to be realized.

172 POPE FRANCIS IN ARMENIA. AMONG A PEOPLE WHO HAVE A «SKIN OF STONE» AND A «MOTHER’S TENDERNESS»

From 24 to 26 June, 2016, Pope Francis travelled to Armenia on his 14th apostolic journey. This apostolic trip is the first to the South Caucasus - a land of cultural and spiritual divisions, a hinge between Europe and Asia -, and forsees a second trip to the region, to Georgia and Azerbaijan, in September. This journey to Armenia was to a land of ancient Christian roots. The Pontiff called the ecumenical spirit to be an effective sign in overcoming conflicts and the wounded memory of the 1915 «genocide». The «glorious and dramatic experience» of the Armenian people, who live «a skin of stone and a mother’s tenderness», is required today to multiply the efforts to let dialogue, the search for peace, cooperation among States prevail in the current dispute; looking to a future that finds its symbol in Noah's ark.

At the Teatro dell'Opera of Rome, The Triptych by Giacomo Puccini, directed by Damiano Michieletto, was performed. The three one-act plays (Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica, Gianni Schicchi), which Puccini intended to be performed in a single evening, offer food for thought on some of the darker aspects of human behavior (perpetrated and suffered violence, greed, deception...).
